Hiking of Volcano Lonquimay
| Located in the Andes Mountain range in the Araucanía región, between Malalcahuello and Lonquimay about 130 km to the north east of the city Temuco. Geologically, it is a part of the 'Fire Belt’ of the Pacific, named from the volcanoes that have the majority of the activity in the south of Chile. It is considered the twin or older brother of Volcano Tolhuaca. It has had three registered eruptions, the most recent on the 25th of December, 1988, which gave origin to the Christmas Crater. The Mapuche, orignal native inhabitants, say that its name means “Great Gorge” and it was placed for them since ancient times, due to a wide ravine of 120 meters of altitude on the eastern face of the mountain. It becomes more and more beautiful the more you continue inland where it is also possible to see volcanoes Llaima, Villarrica, Lanín, Quetrupillán and Sierra Nevada around you. The marvelous peak of Volcano Lonquimay not only allows one to see a great part of the region, lagoons, other volcanoes, rivers, etc., but its immense crater of more than 800 meters of longitude makes it one of the largest of the volcanoes in the Chilean Austral completely covered by a glacier. This beautiful volcano has an altitude of 2,865 meters and it takes about five hours with a normal physical condition to reach the top. When the fall snows begin, the volcano is covered in white and the surrounding environment is a marvelous white view. In winter, with the cone completely covered and the araucaria forests covered in snow, it is posible to enjoy the ski resort located on the slopes of the volcano.
