Hiking to the crater of active Volcano Villarrica
The ascent to the crater of one of the most active volcanoes in the world, Volcano Villarrica (Altitude: 2,847 meters/ 9,440 feet), is essential for all physically active tourists that visit Pucón. The departure to the base of the volcano is in the early morning, at 6:30 AM, from the town of Pucón. After receiving our mountain equipment, we head to Villarrica National Park (approx. 45 minutes by car), towards the Rucapillan sector. From here, we start hiking for three to five hours, over volcanic rock, snow, and ice. Experienced guides who are approved by the Municipality of Pucón bring us in small groups, accomodating the ability and physical condition of each participant, with rests every hour. In the first part of the hike, there is a chair lift, in which during days without wind, helps us climb 400 meters of the altitude, reducing the hike by an hour. Although this ascent presents itself as a challenge, it is completely possible for all adventurers of all physical condtions as long as you have a positive attitude. The technical equipment provided by ELEMENTOS allows us to reach the bubbling, lava-filled abyss between noon and 2pm. During clear days, from the summit, the view is impressive. It is possible to see more than ten volcanoes, numerous lakes and rivers, the coast of the Pacific Ocean, and the neighboring country, Argentina. |
